Take a cable car to Alp Languard from the centre of Pontresina and walk from here to Muottas Muragl. Walking at almost 2,500m altitude you’ll enjoy far reaching views over verdant alpine forests and to the glistening Morteratsch glacier.

Take the chair lift to Alp Languard. On disembarking, you commence a moderate uphill climb on a gravel path with the peaks of Piz Languard and Piz Chalchagn visible on your right. The climb steepens up the flank of Piz Muragl with spectacular views of the Morteratsch glacier and the Engadin valley and zig zags with vertiginous slopes on your left until it intercepts the Steinbock path. The gradient reduces but the climb continues until the remote Segantini hut. From here the views are outstanding as the lower Engadine valley opens up with the shining lakes of St Moritz and beyond. From the high point you descend gently at first over stony well-trodden paths as it zig zags  over the steepest part of the gradient down into Val Muragl. At the head of the valley stands Piz Vadret and you climb to the cable car station at Muottas Muragl with further amazing views into Val Roseg and Silvaplana. At the base of the cable car you can either catch the train or take an easy riverside walk on a well-marked path back to Pontresina.

Cable car and public transport info can be found here:  www.sbb.ch

Conseil(s) de l'auteur

This walk is not recommened for vertigo-sufferers as the path is narrow in places with a sharp drop beside the trail.

Points of Interest

Segantini Hut

The famous artist, Giovanni Segantini, spent his latter life in the Engadin. Having been born Austrian, he became stateless when his guardian, his half-sister, moved to Milan and failed to apply for Italian citizenship. After a sudden illness, he died in the mountains above Pontresina whilst completing his last major work. The Swiss authorities awarded him citizenship posthumously.

Ibex

The ibex was driven to extinction in Switzerland but was successfully reintroduced after prominent Swiss figures commissioned poachers to steal kids from the Aosta Valley in Italy. One hundred years later, in 2006, a symbolic gift of Swiss ibex was made to Italy to atone for the illegal activity. Now, the largest ibex colony, approximately 1600 animals, inhabits Val Languard
