The "Sentiero Smeraldo" (Emerald Trail) is a project of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) realised in co-operation with the office of tourism as part of Switzerland's "Emerald Network". Its goal is to publicise and raise awareness about the Emerald species and habitats of Mendrisiotto - one of three places in the canton of Ticino richest in these rare and endangered species and habitats.
At the Mendrisio railway station, take the postbus to Rancate (approx. 5-10 min), which is where the walk begins. Follow the steadily inclining route to Tremona, where the lovely Romanesque Church of Sant'Agata awaits you on top of the hill. The next stop is Meride. Stroll around and enjoy this idyllic little town - the fossil museum is a special point of interest and well worth a visit. Passing by the baroque Church of San Silvestro you will continue to gradually gain altitude until you reach Mount San Giorgio, offering you a magnificent panoramic view. The last part of the journey takes you back down to Serpiano.
