The proposed route follows the Sarine upstream of Fribourg, at times on its banks, at others along its cliffs. Here the Sarine has cut deep gorges in the sandstone. This is an easy and very varied itinerary. From Grangeneuve, with its school of agriculture, around 2½ hours are needed to complete the walk. The route follows the Sarine upstream as far as La Tuffière on its left bank. The path leads at first through a very pretty beech grove where in spring you can admire liverwort, as indeed is the case at many places along the way. It then drops to the level of the Sarine and continues along the bed of an old arm of the river. It then opens onto a delightful passage on the river bank itself under an overhang of sandstone; this section must however be negotiated with care. If the level of the Sarine makes it impossible, you will have to retrace your steps by around 200 metres. Following a path that stays with the river for most of the way, you will arrive without problem at the hamlet of La Tuffière. Here you will cross the bridge spanning the Sarine, from where the view of the canyon is superb.
The route ends on the cliff top with the discovery of a charming site where the Cistercian Abbey of Hauterive was founded in 1138. A community of around twenty monks of the Order of Cîteaux lives in this place of contemplation.
Note(s) To organise a visit to Hauterive Abbey or to find out the opening times of the monastic shop have a look to www.abbaye-hauterive.ch. In a quite different register, beer lovers can visit the La Croix-Blanche Brewery in Posieux to sample their traditional ales.
Caution: the passage under the molasse overhang along the shore of the river Sarine (575'050 / 178'440 - Pré d'En bas) must be crossed with caution, particularly in periods of frost and thaw. Do not stop under the overhang!
